TE1 - Q&A with Tight End Tommy Auger
We caught up with the former FCF’s #1 Tight End as he prepares for his next journey in professional football!
SFF: Take us back to when you first started playing football. Where did you develop a passion for the sport?
Auger: “As long as I can remember I have loved football. I grew up around it, with my dad being a football coach and my mom being an athletic trainer and have always wanted to play it.”
SFF: You went to high school in St. Cloud, Minnesota. what was the competitiveness like in that area when you played?
Auger: “It was good competition, it helped me develop grit because at our school we played both sides of the ball and almost every team in Central MN runs the football heavily so you’ve gotta develop a toughness and get used to hard nose football.”
SFF: You attended Division III St. John’s University during your collegiate career. What gravitated you to the Jonnie’s football program and also the academics side of the school?
Auger: “I loved the coaches and knew I was going to get a great education there. I decided to go to a smaller school also so that I could play college baseball as well as football. St John’s is an awesome school and I could not have made a better decision than choosing SJU.”
SFF: Fan Controlled Football gave you your first chance to play professional football in the US. Walk us through what it was like playing in the FCF in 2022?
Auger: “Actually I played a professional season in 2021 as well in Austria. I led the league in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. In 6 games, I had 38 catches for 658 yds and 8 TDs. FCF was great as well though, it gave me the opportunity to show what I can do on a bigger stage and against players from much bigger name schools. I feel like I proved myself in both blocking a receiving there and was named to the All-FCF team.”
SFF: Having been to Pullman Yards myself, can you give the readers a description of the venue from a players perspective. How unique is Pullman compared to your typical football stadium.
Auger: “Definitely unique and cool. This was my first time playing indoor football so it was great how the fans are basically right on top of you. The stadium was always lively on game days.”
SFF: As we shift gears to what might be next for you in pro football, have you had a chance to workout for any leagues or teams since the end of the FCF season?
Auger: “I was invited down to Arlington to workout in the XFL showcase for all 8 XFL teams. Then from that the Orlando staff reached out and invited me to a private workout for them. I also have been in touch with some other coaches. My next workout is a private workout for the DC XFL team coming up this weekend.”
SFF: Can you elaborate at all on what the XFL Private Workout entailed?
Auger: “We did individual position drills, routes on air with the QBs and then did 1 on 1s against the defensive players that were at the private workout. The workout went well and I won all of my 1 on 1s there.”
SFF: As we wrap up here, is the next goal to be drafted to play in the XFL in 2023?
Auger: “I would love that. I just want to play at the highest level I can and against the best competition I can. If that is the XFL then that is where I want to be!”
